According to currency specialist HiFX, enquiries from British people buying property in Portugal have more than doubled since March 2006.
On this basis, Mark Bodega, marketing director for HiFX, said that Portugal is "in the first tier" of destinations that British property buyers regularly choose for investment. Portugal has a stable economy and strong rental sector due to the small army of Brits that holiday in the Algarve each year.
The Algarve region on Portugal's south coast has continued to prove particularly popular among British holidaymakers.

SPANISH CAPITAL GAINS TAX CUT


The 500,000 Britons who own property in Spain can continue to celebrate this New Year thanks to changes in Capital Gains Tax (CGT) legislation for non-residents.
In October, the Spanish Senate approved Legislation to reduce the CGT which is Payable on the difference between the original purchase price and the selling price for non-residents. As of January, 2007, Spanish CGT for non-residents has been reduced by almost half, down from 35% to just 18%. The new legislation means that Britons planning on selling their Spanish property can achieve greater profits, making more capital available to be reinvested elsewhere. They also approved a reduction in the withholding provision that non-residents pay when selling property in Spain from 5% to 3%. The withholding provision is paid to the Spanish tax authorities upon completion and covers any debts the seller may have accrued which could be difficult to recover once they have left the country.

LOW COST FLIGHTS – PRICES SLASHED

 

Morocco has become the latest destination for the low-cost airlines' price war, with fares slashed from the £200 mark to start from just £17 one- way. Ryanair has announced the launch of two new Moroccan routes this winter -- Fez and Marrakesh from London Luton -- with prices starting from just £17 one way. The pre-tax fare is just £1.44 in either direction and are available for travel from 31 October.

 

Thomsonfly has quickly reacted to announce it would now be selling its new Luton-Morocco route (also launching in winter) from just £19.99 one way (pre-tax is £1.49), starting in November. Meanwhile, easyJet is now into its third week of its route to Marrakesh from London and is currently the only UK low-cost carrier offering pre-winter flights to the Moroccan hot spot. Flights start from £22.99 for the winter period.

ALGARVE TOURISM ON THE INCREASE

The Algarve Tourism Board (RTA) has predicted good news for the region’s coffers this summer (especially the owners of rental property on the Algarve), with its official estimate for the forthcoming season showing an expected increase of approximately four per cent in tourist activity from the UK, Ireland and Germany, the Algarve’s three largest foreign markets.

 

According to RTA figures, Faro airport saw an increase of 7.8 per cent in the number of arrivals, translating into around one million arrivals in total, for the first four months of the year. The RTA predicts an increase over the summer of around 3.5 per cent. The largest increase in terms of country of origin has been found in the Dutch sector, where several factors led by the launch of a multi-million-pound advertising campaign in Holland have resulted in a 25 per cent increase in the number of Dutch citizens arriving in the Algarve. The number of Germans visiting the region is also on the up, according to the Algarve Tourism Board.
