The Republic of Cape Verde is a group of ten islands, 400 km off the west coast of Africa. It was discovered in the 15th century by the Portuguese and given their independence in 1975. Cape Verde is the closest tropical island to Europe offering easy flight times from the UK of just 5½ hours.
There are two international airports in Cape Verde, Praia and Amilcar (on Sal Island) offering direct flights from Amsterdam, Paris, Lisbon, Las Palmas and trans Atlantic flights. Direct flights from the UK will start in November 2006.
The Islands are located in the same line and latitude as Barbados allowing summer weather all year round boasting an average temperature of around 25 degrees along with 10 - 12 hours of sunshine daily. Because the Islands are 3 degrees higher than that of the Canary Islands you have perfect temperatures for swimming and sunbathing all year round.
